Unless you’ve been living in a submarine these last few months, you won’t have missed the fact that the UK is having a big year. Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee went off with a big — though sometimes rainy — bang, and it’s now only a few weeks to the 2012 London Olympics, which run from July 27 through August 12.

But visitors to the UK can expect a spillover effect that will last through the summer, and in all likelihood for some time afterwards. TV coverage of the Olympics will focus heavily on the city itself, showcasing key attractions and wooing previously unconvinced travelers, boosting visitor numbers for many months to come. If you’re among those numbers you’re in for a real treat: London has spruced itself up and looks magnificent, echoing Sydney‘s perfect Olympic year in 2000.
But while it’s a great time to visit, it’s also one of those times you really do need to plan ahead in a little more detail. Even grand attractions like the Tower of London, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and The London Eye have capacity constraints, and there will be many who’ll go home disappointed over this London season, having missed the one thing they really wanted to see. Don’t be among them!
