Kakadu National Park in Australia’s Northern Territory has been on my “to do list” for many years.
I still remember the words from the old television commercials as I was growing up promoting the Northern Territory and Kakadu as a must visit destination.
The tag line went:
“You’ll never never know if you never never go”
Well, I did go recently and now I know what they have been banging on about.
My 6 day photo safari took me right into the heart of Kakadu National Park where I experienced its dramatic landscape, Aboriginal cultural significance, and abundant wildlife.
Kakadu, one of the few places UNESCO World Heritage Listed for both its cultural and natural values, is located within the Alligator Rivers Region and covers an area of 20,000 square kilometres.
It has been called a living cultural landscape, as Aboriginal people have occupied the area continuously for at least 40 000 years.
Yellow Water Cruise
Kakadu is one of the world’s richest wildlife parks, and one of the best ways to experience it is to tour its wetlands on a cruise.
We took a two hour cruise through the famous Yellow Water Kakadu wetland. This tributary of the South Alligator River contains an impressive concentration of wildlife and stunning landscapes.
Below is a collection of my photos through the lens of my Canon EOS 650D
Morning Light and Mist
Sunrise
The sun rising over the wetlands was a spectacular moment and one to put on your world sunrise bucket list.
Reflections
The still waters of the billabong made the reflections of the trees stand out. I loved it.
Saltwater Crocodiles
Large saltwater crocodiles are commonplace in Kakadu and all over the Top End. Seeing them up close in their natural habitat was awesome. Just stay in your boat because they snap when hungry.
The Landscape
The Bird Life
Incredibly, the park is home to more than one third of Australia’s bird species.
