It’s Sturgis Time Again

Sturgis.jpgIf I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.

Every year in early August, every serious biker feels a rumbling in their blood. It's the urge to ride, the siren call of the biggest, baddest biker rally of them all: Sturgis.

The 72nd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will take place in Sturgis, South Dakota from August 6 to August 12, 2012. There will be drinking. There will be noise. There will be adult behavior. And most of all, there will be motorcycles and the people who live to ride them.

Sturgis is a sleepy little town with a population of approximately 6,700. During the Motorcycle Rally, the population of Sturgis swells to over 500,000. The resident population of the entire state of South Dakota is only 750,000, so you can just imagine how the balance of the state tips in the direction of Sturgis for the week.

Best Western hotels are well represented in the Sturgis area. Right in town, there's the BEST WESTERN Sturgis Inn on Junction Avenue. You have to plan way ahead to secure a room at the Sturgis Inn during the Rally. The BEST WESTERN Hickok House is in nearby Deadwood, just 12 miles down the road, and the BEST WESTERN Black Hills Lodge sits in Spearfish, a mere 18 miles away. There are six more Best Western hotels within a 50-mile radius of Sturgis, a very workable distance from the center of the Rally.

If you haven't made your plans to attend Sturgis this year, it's not too late. Planning ahead is great, but motorcycle trips run on gasoline and spontaneity. You might find a last-minute cancellation at a conveniently-located Best Western hotel -- it happens.

If you're intent on planning ahead, it's not too early to start thinking about the 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which will take place from August 5 through August 11, 2013.
